CHANDIGARH: When a coloured man was sworn in for the most powerful post in the world, it was a moment of joy for the race that has seen tremendous oppression over the centuries.
Africans staying in Chandigarh celebrated the occasion which had been awaited as eagerly as it was unexpected. Their happiness found expression in dancing to Punjabi tunes at a party in Sector 40 where over 100 of them had gathered.
Barack Obama became the 44th President of the USA on late Tuesday evening.

Millions around the world watched the ceremony on their television sets.
Kenyan nationals Duke and Regina who assembled the gathering in the city were unable to hold back their tears.
Duke���s village is near Alego-Kogello, from where Obama���s grandfather hailed. ���I think the entire world is happy. For the first time, a black man is taking over the top office of the world���s super power,��� said Duke. he said his family in Kenya was also glued to the television.
The 34-year-old is pursuing an MBA degree here.

He said, ���Obama���s victory symbolizes change not only for the US or Kenya but for the entire world.���
Comparing Obama to Martin Luther King, Abdul from Uganda said, ���He had dreamt of a world where blacks and whites were equal and that day does not seem far.���
Regina, who is pursuing her MSc in nutrition at Government Home Science College, said, ���I am so proud of Obama. I have been crying for hours now.���
���These are the winds of change. Blacks have suffered a lot. They have been discriminated with. The time has come for blacks to get the respect they deserve as human beings and Barack Obama has made that possible,��� said Samuel.
Samuel���s friend Brian from Uganda said, ���I am eagerly waiting the changes Obama can bring about not only in the US but in the entire world for the development of blacks. And I am sure he will. We are all with him,��� said Brian.
